The Six Types of Working Genius form an interdependent model, a comprehensive process for accomplishing any type of work. Each type of genius receives and/or gives something to adjacent types, creating a natural workflow starting with Wonder and culminating in Tenacity.
Work encompasses far more than just what we typically label as "jobs," permeating nearly every aspect of our lives. A significant portion of our waking hours is dedicated to various forms of work.
Patrick Lencioni, along with his team at The Table Group, has identified six distinct types of work, essential whether you're spearheading a product launch, coordinating a nonprofit, or orchestrating a getaway. The Working Genius model delineates these six types of work and identifies the stage of work at which each thrives. Each individual possesses inherent gifts in two of these work types, deriving joy and vigor from them. Consequently, we are naturally drawn to and proficient in these areas.
These innate talents, or "geniuses," are meant to be harnessed for the betterment of the world around us, within our teams, communities, and families. Neglecting or being unable to utilize these gifts can lead to frustration and, at times, significant setbacks. Identifying and leveraging our geniuses is paramount to our fulfillment and effectiveness.
Conversely, there exist types of work that drain our energy and enthusiasm, dubbed our "working frustrations." Many of us grapple with feelings of inadequacy or guilt in these areas, yet minimizing our involvement in them is crucial for optimal productivity and well-being. Awareness of these shortcomings is essential for effective mitigation.
In addition to our geniuses and frustrations, each individual possesses two areas of moderate proficiency, known as our "working competencies." These neither elicit profound joy nor extreme dissatisfaction but are integral to overall work performance.
These six types of work are indispensable across all endeavors, as evidenced by the experiences of countless professionals, from CEOs to educators, and beyond. The Working Genius assessment facilitates the identification of these strengths and weaknesses, empowering individuals to enhance their impact and satisfaction in both work and life. Recognizing our unique contributions underscores the significance of teamwork, as no single person embodies all six geniuses.
Imagine the transformative potential if every organization, team, and family understood and optimized the genius, competency, and frustration areas of their members. Such awareness could catalyze a shift toward greater fulfillment and harmony in society. This transformation begins with individual self-awareness—perhaps starting with you.
